When I first fell in love with New Orleans’ night-life, VAUGHAN’S LOUNGE represented the cult field trip, waaay out there in THE BYWATER! On Thursday nights, KERMIT RUFFINS and his BARBECUE SWINGERS started late, and played late into the night. Recently, after a 20+ year run, KERMIT retired from that gig, as he is probably the hardest working musician in NEW ORLEANS, with either nightly gigs, managing his restaurant/bar of late, or touring all over the country. But my chief draw there is my long-time friend MIKI FUJII who bartends, and was my original guide for here and JOE’S COZY CORNER. I always like to visit with her, and scarf their traditional RED BEANS & RICE self-served from huge pot in back room! Owner, Cindy Wood, is also usually there in fine spirits…see accompanying photos!!But lately, on Thursday evenings, the wonderful TREME band, COREY HENRY’S TREME FUNKTET, again, see photos, rips the place apart!! Really, really fine musicians with a variety of instruments, and in true New Orleans fashion, often inviting fellow local musicians to join in! COREY HENRY is an old friend of mine because his uncle is My Brother, BENNY JONES, SR., leader and drummer of THE TREME BRASS BAND! Also, Corey’s Dad, Benny’s brother, is equally my good buddy and drinking partner at his 2nd home, THE CANDLELIGHT LOUNGE! Sorry to wander off into Fraternal Associationville, but y’all gotta understand that is typical New Orleans!!Thursday night, make the trip; you won’t be disappointed!!
