I had just arrived in New Orleans on Thursday, October 27th, 2011, and had partied from oysters at FELIX’S, drinks at HARRY’S CORNER, watching TREME BRASS BAND playing outside of MAXIMO’S on Decatur St., dropped by both FIORELLA’S and PALM COURT JAZZ CAFE on my walk to FRENCHMEN STREET. Then, on to dinner at JACK DEMPSY’S in the BYWATER. After dinner, Thursday night at VAUGHAN’S with KERMIT RUFFINS and his BARBECUE SWINGERS. Drinks served by pal, MIKI FUJII, and dancing in front of Kermit…in other words, just another normal first day in my second home, NEW ORLEANS!! After 2 AM, we ran into our old friend, CHUCK PERKINS, as VAUGHAN’S was closing. Chuck, who is New Orleans’ fabulous front man as poet, TV personality, raconteur, and general sparkling shooting star, invited us to preview his brand new club that was to open the next evening with a grand Halloween party! How wonderful to be in this magnificent space in the wee hours of the morning checking it all out!! (But guess what? We STILL went back to HARRY’S CORNER for our final, final B-52 night-caps, hah!!)
So sure enough, the next night I headed to CAFE ISTANBUL for Chuck Perkins’ super party. This set the tone for future events at this art center; combinations of jazz, dance, poetry, art performance, and anything else creative!!
When in town, if you want some real art, always check out who or what is happening there!!
