On my first visit to BREAUX BRIDGE, LA, I did a lot of research beforehand, sent away to the tourist board for regional information. When I arrived, I went to the tiny Visitors Center, and introduced myself. Of course, these people were so delightful, and helped me pick out local spots to see. Right down the street from them were/are several antique shops, and the most famous dining spot around, CAFE DES AMIS. My two fave antique shops are, JANELL’S ANTIQUE’S & GIFTS, and LE NAPOLEON ANTIQUES, both on E. BRIDGE STREET. Both places are owned and operated by beautiful, elegant Southern ladies. Talk about friendly, helpful, and charming, I return often just to visit them!! CAFE DES AMIS is another of my fave lunch spots in the afternoon. They are famous for their Saturday morning live music and dance ZYDECO BREAKFAST, but somehow, I have never gotten it together to meet their 8:30 AM opening…the crowds are waiting, and I don’t like crowds.
But the center piece of this Post is my Only In The South description of our visit to THE BRIDGE BAR:
Margaret, Jenae and I were spending a few days around July 4th in the area. I was sharing all of these spots with Jenae, who just started joining Margaret and me touring. When we checked out THE BRIDGE BAR, which is located right across the BAYOU TECHE from our cabins, the women wanted to play pool. The rear of the bar has several pool tables, and there were a couple of guys playing nearby. They asked if we would mind the air conditioner turned up, which was fine, and I complimented one of them on his beautiful T-shirt, *He immediately offered it to me!! Caught off guard, I thanked him, but was just admiring it. He disappeared into the Men’s room and re-appeared wearing a different T, but handing me the one I liked!! I was blown away!! A little later, I slipped him a folded up hundred dollar bill, which he slipped into his pocket without examining. Margaret and Jenae, remarked that was an expensive T-shirt! I answered, the T-shirt was free; I paid for an Art Experience of a life-time!!
